But, it is time my friends, that the Hills comes to an end. After 6 years of trashy, but amazing, television, the final episode of my one addiction airs in 2 weeks- which makes me incredibly sad, to the point where I might even cry that these rich, socialite, fame hunting, famous for what, kids will not be part of my life anymore.

I think that for me, the whole Hill’s phenomenon has not just been about the show, it’s been about the way in which the stars of the show have become overnight celebrities- literally overnight.

I also think that why I love these reality shows, has a lot to do with the way in which they are heavily linked to the advertising and PR industries. Let’s look at ‘The City’- a spinoff to ‘The Hills’. A star of this show, Erin Kaplin, is the national PR executive of Elle Magazine- and she’s only 24 (i’m definetly jealous). Then look at Whitney Port, she works for PR queen Kelly Cutrone- owner of People’s Revolution. Working for Elle and People’s Rev would be a DREAM.. and these girl’s (who don’t even have a university degree) get the job in a second. Taking this into consideration, it’s no secret that these companies obviously hire these girls in order to be on these reality shows and gain more exposure from the most powerful audience in the world.

Does it work? I think so. I never took notice of Elle magazine before it was on the City.. and now, I’m a monthly buyer of it. As for People’s Revolution- I never knew what it was. Now, I getting their address and sending them my resume.

Lauren Conrad the main star of the show is estimated to be making $100,000 an episode with additional book deals, endorsements, magazine covers, clothing lines, and that’s just the beginning of it. These reality stars, not just from the Hills, but from other shows like Jersey Shore, The Bachelor, Keeping up with the Kardashians, are an advertisers dream! Put these stars faces on an ad and you’re guaranteed to make millions.

It really makes me question why Australia haven’t jumped on the reality TV/The Hills bandwagon. So i’ll put it out there now television executives, if you ever want to make the Australian version of the Hills, CALL ME.

Being an advertising student, one of the highlights of seeing a movie is watching the 15 minutes worth of previews. As Shrek is predominantly a kids movie, the previews I was watching were for the same type of genre. While wearing my 3D glasses, I watched previews for upcoming animated movies which absolutely blew me away (and made me jump out of my seat). As for the movie itself, the 3D hype definitely lived up to, and went beyond my expectations.

At the end of a movie, I always find it fasinating to listen to everyone talk about their thoughts of the movie as they walk out the door of the cinema. I was surprised to hear that all of the adults were talking about the amazing 3D effects while the children didn’t seem fazed by it.

This officially made me feel ‘old’ as I was one of the ‘adults’ talking to my friend about how amazing it was when i jumped out of my seat due a tree flying towards my face (thanks to the 3D effects).

I remember when I saw animated movies when I was younger. Aladdin, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty.. all absolute classics- but, all in 2D. My dad always says things to me  such as “I remember when I was your age, we sat in the stalls when we went to the movies” or “when I was your age, we went to bandstand on a saturday night”. It fasinates me, yet somewhat scares me, that in 20 years, i’ll be saying to my kids “when I was your age, we watched movies and TV shows in 2D” where i’ll be getting responses such as “yeah right” and “what’s 2D?”.

Does this mean that kids will grow up with 3D television with 2D being the unimaginable to them, much like black and white TV is to me? I guess so.

The one things that excites me immensely about 3D, is the spectacular advertising that can, and will, be created. Just imagine car commercials- having the car drive through the mountains and straight towards you. Amazing.

So, welcome to the world 3D.

Kudos to the Australian Electoral Commission for this.

Coincidence?

My lecturer explained to us that it’s extremely important to create an online identity which could make (or break) your career.

But the main thing that made me realise that you can gain a job through being ‘head hunted’ on the internet was this:

60% of people found their last job through social networks
73% of executives found their last job through networking
68% of recruiters use social networking sites to support recruitment efforts with 49% from Linkedin, 30% from Facebook and 21% from Twitter.

Another thing we discussed in this lecture was what comes up when you Google your name. Luckily for me, the following is what you will see when you Google ‘Sarah Bartfeld’.

Alright, I better go glam up my Facebook profile pic, write a semi-interesting tweet and update my Linkedin account so that my next future employer knows where to find me.

The ad was created by Metlink Melbourne to advertise to Generation Y, their new Iphone app and online services for public transport timetables. The ad is set on the Hurstbridge train line, and although not everyone catches this line, I think that everyone can relate to the video regardless.

Watching this video made me start thinking about the various follow up viral ads you could produce as a series for this campaign. It would be interesting to see videos produced for each train line and using the theme of ‘stereotypes’.

As a Generation Y’er, I know from discussions I’ve had with my friends, that each train line in Melbourne comes with it’s own reputation. Just look at the Facebook groups created, for example, “I feel safe on the train LOL JK I catch the Frankston line”. If we look at the two train lines that i frequently catch, it can be discussed (and even argued for that matter) that the Sandringham line is known for carrying passengers who are private school kids and live in the bayside suburbs of Melbourne, while the Frankston line is known for carrying passengers who like to start their Friday night drinks at 9am on a Tuesday morning, so don’t make eye contact with anyone.

Being a passenger of both the Sandringham and the Frankston train lines, I do agree that the overall passenger feel is slightly different on each line, however, you can find both types on both train lines.

So, Metlink, I look forward to seeing what you produce for the rest of this campaign.. and if you need any ideas, just give me a call

I just stumbled across the ‘stats’ page of wordpress where you can view how many people have viewed your blog.. and I am shocked as to how many people have actually visited my site! Although it’s nothing compared to blogs such as perezhilton, i’m still impressed with the 50 something views i get on an average day!

Looking at these stats got me thinking about how easy it is send a message out via the internet.. although this is something that we already knew. Take Twitter for example. I joined the Twitter club in order to follow my favourite celebs, for some reason seeing a twit pic of Paris Hilton’s starbucks coffee cup interests me.

Along with this, I have noticed that the celebrities i follow all partake in “Follow Friday”.. a day where celebs make it their aim to get more people to follow them.. pushing their “followers” up into millions. They ‘Tweet’ messages such as “Happy Follow Friday! Let’s try and make it to 2 million followers today!”.

I find it somewhat amusing, interesting, intriguing (i don’t quite no which word to use here), that Twitter is almost a popularity contest. So because Kim Kardashian has 1 million followers, compared to Tyra Banks who only has 500,000 (these are rough estimates by the way), does that make Kim feel better about herself?

However, I shouldn’t sit here and question whether this “power” that one feels when you have more followers shows that you’re a bigger and better celeb than others, because I know, that if I were an A list celeb living in LA, lunching at the Ivy, partying at Area nightclub and shopping at Kitson, I too would probably partake in Follow Friday, and probably call my Mum and say “OMG i just got 1 million followers on Twitter!”. Shallow? Who knows.

So let’s do an experiement.. if you have read this.. number 1- thank you, and number 2- follow me on twitter (http://twitter.com/SarahBartfeld).. I’m interested to see if, like Nicole Richie, Lauren Conrad, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson (we could be here all day if i keep going), I can get people to follow me through one simple message.

However, this ad really hit me, because admit it, we’ve all quickly sent a text message, checked the time or answered a phone call while driving.

I’m actually quite surprised at the impact this ad had on me. From now on, I’m not going ANYWHERE near my phone when I’m driving. EVER AGAIN.

The client definitely got their moneys worth out of this ad. It has hit the target market head on and it’s absolutely changed my attitude about “it will never happen to me”.. after watching this video, I’m now saying “it CAN happen to me”.

I love expressing myself through visuals. I have books full of pictures i find in magazines, collages, quotes that i find. It helps to represent how i’m feeling and in terms of advertising, the things that your brief should entail and what your target market want. I love presenting things by representing what the final outcome is about. When it comes to my honours project, i’m so excited to create my exegesis, it’s going to really help justify my outcome.

Not only does this video give us a very clear representation of what social media is like, it helps to attract attention and make people think. It’s better than a 1 hour lecture, right?

Moral of the story, don’t stop at the final outcome, the way you present it is just an important.

When you look into this deeply, do you think that news-stands, news-agencies, and even supermarkets will lose a great deal of money? AND, if you’re concerned for the kids of our future, what will they do without their morning paper round jobs?

I think newspapers going digital should happen in LESS than 10 years. Why wait?

It was bound to happen eventually right?
